Friends of Mongolia Scholarship Programs
The Friends of Mongolia Scholarship program aims to connect Americans and Mongolians through the power of education. We recognize that education provides tools and skills that enable us to improve the quality of life for ourselves and for others. Education often provides financial security, family stability, respect, and critical skills required to serve our greater community. FOM embraces the role education plays in our societies and is eager to support human development in Mongolia and world-wide. We now have three scholarship programs at FOM.
Scholarships are provided on an annual basis, and students may have their scholarships renewed if they have maintained their academic requirements. We underwrite all or nearly all of each student's tuition, depending on the tuition rates of the student's university. In 2022 we expanded our program further to offer scholarship recipients personal & professional development programs.
FOM-Matthew Girvin Scholarship
The Matthew Girvin Scholarship Program is supported primarily by the Matthew Girvin Fund. This was established in the spring of 2006, and has supported over one hundred and fifty Mongolian university students over the course of the past 15 years. Our program targets underserved, rural applicants with high academic potential and financial need who want to attend university in Mongolia.

This fund was created in memory of Matthew Girvin, a UNICEF program officer who worked for the development of Mongolia's children, health, and future. Matthew was killed in a tragic helicopter crash in Mongolia in January of 2001. UNICEF established a scholarship in Matthew's honor in 2003, and in 2006 Friends of Mongolia began administering the scholarship. Our organization is honored to be able to have the chance to assist Girvin family with this important scholarship, and we look forward to working with them to honor Matthew's legacy for years to come. FOM-Mongolia 21|21 Scholarship
The Mongolia 21|21 Scholarship is a new program beginning in 2023. It serves as a centralizing hub between Rotary Clubs in the United States and students from each province in Mongolia (21 provinces). Our program targets underserved, students with high academic potential and financial need who want to attend university in Mongolia. Once selected, scholarship recipients are given preference for future awards if they are in good standing with the university during their term of study.
We also strive to strengthen awareness and relations between Mongolian students and Mongolian Rotaract and Rotary as organizations who serve the local and global communities.

FOM- Leadership Scholarship
The FOM Leadership Scholarship is a new scholarship program beginning in 2023. This scholarship fund was created in order to support Mongolian secondary school graduates wishing to study at some of the best state institutions of higher learning within the country. It is the Friends of Mongolia's desire to annually fund full-tuition scholarships for students from low-income families in or around Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (including ger districts or suburbs) who serve as leaders in their community and/or family. Once selected, scholarship recipients are given preference for future awards if they are in good standing with the university during their term of study.
The FOM Leadership Scholarship may include multiple donors, with varying requirements or levels of engagement. Students may receive scholarships in honor of outstanding citizens (American or Mongolian) and may have additional expectations or variations to funding. The minimal amount of support guaranteed by FOM includes covering tuition expenses.

The 2023-2024 scholarship applications are now closed, however we have shared the Application Form in the news section so students can begin gathering the necessary documents. We will begin receiving applications on July 1st 2023 and will share the link for submissions at that time.
All of the information collected in this process will remain internal to FOM, no personal data will be shared.
